We considered two pathways through which early relationships with mothers-in-laws may affect subsequent in-law relationship qualities: a dimensions of the early relationship and, b beliefs and expectations of the future relationship. Measures at Time 1 assessed three dimensions of the in-law relationship: a behavioral contact by phone, in person , b emotional positive and negative relationship qualities , and c cognitive knowledge about the other person. Participants also described positive and negative expectations of their future tie. Multilevel models revealed that dimensions of the tie prior to the marriage were associated with post-wedding in-law relationship qualities. When the parties had individual contact with one another and positive feelings before the wedding, ties were stronger following the wedding. Data from open-ended descriptions of negative expectations obtained before the wedding predicted negative relationship qualities after the wedding. Husbands, wives, and mothers-in-law showed similar patterns with regard to relationship qualities. Discussion focuses on the role of early emotional qualities of the in-law tie for subsequent in-law relationships. This study fills a significant gap in the literature by examining the formation of in-law ties. Dynamics of the early in-law relationships may help explain subsequent in-law relationship qualities.

Instead, most dating advice focuses on the nuts and bolts of dating: what to say, when to say it, how to not look like an ass-face. A lot of people use the words loosely to try to define that thing which exists in the space between two people — the unspeakable and unseen connection or lack thereof.
Compatibility is the natural alignment of lifestyle choices and values of two people. A youth minister and a drug dealer are probably incompatible and I doubt many end up dating each other. If I value women who are intelligent and educated and I meet a high school dropout who is attracted to guys who have big muscles and like to hunt deer, then we have a fundamental incompatibility that will probably never be overcome and we will never date one another.

Some of the terms have definitions that are not clearly established or universally accepted, particularly with regards to terms used to describe various relationship styles. Where possible, I have tried to define such terms in ways that reflect all these different usages. Some of the terms in this glossary are used primarily in swinging; it should not be inferred from this that polyamory and swinging are the same thing.
Rather, there is enough crossover between the poly and swinging community that knowledge of some swinging terms is often helpful. The definitions given here, particularly of colloquialisms, reflect the usage I am most familiar with. Some terms contain commentary; anything following the word Commentary indicates my own experiences, interpretations, or views on a particular subject, and should not be assumed to be part of the formal definition of the word.

Like other relationships in our lives, romantic relationships play an important role in fulfilling our needs for intimacy, social connection, and sexual relations. Like friendships, romantic relationships also follow general stages of creation and deterioration. In many Western cultures, romantic relationships are voluntary. We are free to decide whom to date and form life-long romantic relationships.
In some Eastern cultures these decisions may be made by parents, or elders in the community, based on what is good for the family or social group. Even in Western societies, not everyone holds the same amount of freedom and power to determine their relational partners.
